Occurs when a dog feels helpless to avoid negative situations. Generally this is a type of fallout from punishment training or overuse of aversive tools. Unclear criteria or weak communication can also result in it. Poor training can unintentionally condition a dog to think there’s no way to shut off the negative experience and will consequently do nothing at all. They kind of “shut down.” It is unproductive in training and likely creates extended residual stress resulting in psychological damage.
