“Prey Drive” is the common term for what is more accurately referred to as “Predatory Instinct.” It is the inherent, biologically driven desire to chase and acquire things, usually prey.
For this reason, we amplify the value of food and toy rewards by having the dog chase them. This drive increases in intensity with rehearsal—the more the dog chases things, the more motivating it becomes. We harness this enthusiasm and funnel it into Engagement. Contrary to outdated beliefs, this does not increase aggression.
Predatory Instinct needs to be distinguished from Predatory Drift, which is a dangerous form of Prey Drive where a dog attacks other dogs as if they are prey animals.
