A dog’s tolerance for certain things, such as pain, arousal, time, and proximity to a trigger. It’s the invisible boundary line separating where a dog can maintain composure and where they begin to unravel. We always want to work below the threshold so that the dog’s frontal lobe—their “thinking” brain—remains mostly online. Once a dog goes over the threshold, they’re no longer in a place where they can think and learn. Ideally, we build skills in a neutral environment and then work to “tickle the edge” of the dog’s threshold to build resilience gradually.
